When you shop, getting the right size matters. If you miscalculate, then you’re stuck with a shoe that pinches your toes or pants that don’t stay up. It’s a similar situation for your home’s water system—all of the parts need to be the right size for your family’s needs. If not, you may run out of water—a result much more upsetting than any ill-fitting clothing. Below are some tips that will help you estimate the right “measurements” for your
water tank and pump.
Average Daily Consumption
The previous blog discussed how to figure out your household’s daily water consumption for conservation purposes. If you
calculated how much water your household consumes, use that number as a guide. If you didn’t figure out your daily water consumption, the
New Jersey Ground Water Association estimates that the average person uses between 75 and 150 gallons of water per day. You can multiply that estimate by the number of people in your home to approximate your household’s water consumption.
In addition to knowing how much water you need on a daily basis, you also have to consider your home’s “peak flow.” The peak flow occurs at the times when you have the greatest demand for water. For example, perhaps the dishwasher and washing machine are running, and two people are taking long shower—all at the same time. Or, maybe you have relatives over for the holidays, and your demand for water doubles. Your
water tanks and
water pump need to be able to handle this workload, or else your holidays may not be full of good cheer.
Consider the Outdoors
Lastly, think about how much water you use for outside purposes. These outdoor appliances require a lot of water, and they need to be taken into account, as well:
- Swimming pool
- Lawn sprinklers
- Outdoor fountains or other water features
- Heating and cooling system
All of the above factors will affect your water consumption, which determines what size of
water tank and pump you will need.
