Sump Pump

Flooded Basement? A Sump Pump Could Be the Answer

If your Hamburg home sits on top of a basement, you may have to consider how your home is set up to handle excess groundwater. This is especially true for homes in low-lying regions or places prone to rapid snowmelt or flooding. At Ackerson Pump Company, we help homeowners maintain a dry basement with expert sump pump installation. So, what is a sump pump? Let’s take a look.

How Do Sump Pumps Work?

A sump pump is a device installed in the lowest part of a basement or crawl space. Its primary function is to pump out water that has collected in a sump basin, usually found in a specially constructed pit. This helps keep the area under the building dry, preventing flooding and water damage.

The mechanics of these systems are pretty straightforward. When groundwater or heavy rain causes the water table to rise, the water flows into the sump pit through drains or natural water paths through the soil. As the pit fills with water, the pump activates automatically, usually through a float switch. Then, it pumps the water out of the pit and away from your home’s foundation.

Types of Sump Pumps

There are two main types of sump pumps: submersible and pedestal. A submersible pump operates underwater. They tend to be quieter but a bit more expensive. On the other hand, a pedestal pump has the motor mounted above the pit, making it easier to maintain but a bit noisier.

Maintenance Tips

If you have a sump pump or are considering having one installed in your basement, it’s important to regularly check it for debris, test the float switch, and make sure the discharge pipe is free from obstructions. Our team at Ackerson Pump Company can help. We can inspect your pump to catch minor issues before they become significant problems. And if your pump encounters a problem, we’re just a phone call away.
