Water Tank Replacement: 3 Signs You May Need to Replace Yours

How do you know if your water tank needs to be replaced? Most of the time, you’re not aware of a problem until you’re suddenly out of water. There are some unmistakable indications that your home’s water tank may be on the fritz. At Ackerson Pump Company, we recommend watching for these three signs that your water tank may need to be replaced sooner rather than later.

1. Completely Fills with Water

A pressurized water tank needs both compressed air and water to work effectively. Without any air pressure, the water cannot be pumped into your home’s plumbing system. If the water tank is completely full of water, this could be due to a damaged diaphragm or bladder, depending on the type of water tank you have. You can check if the tank is full of water by removing the cap from the air inlet valve and pushing the piston down. If water comes out instead of air, then the tank needs to be replaced.

2. Loses Pressure

If your home is consistently losing water pressure, this could be the result of a faulty water tank. It could also be caused by a bad pressure switch or a defective well pump. When this occurs, verify that the well pump is working by checking if the electric breaker is on. Next, examine the tank to see if it’s full of water by following the instructions above. If the tank has both water and air pressure, then the problem could be a bad pressure switch or a malfunctioning well pump.

3. Turns on & Off

Another sign that your water tank may not be working is when it short-cycles or turns off and on constantly. When there is a need for water in your home, such as running the dishwasher, the water tank signals to the well pump that more water is needed. If there is little to no air pressure in the tank, it will turn on but only for a few seconds. If you notice this happening more frequently, we recommend you shut the power off to the tank and call a professional like Ackerson.
